Construction Updates

Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens suffered a major landslide on April 27, 2023 with half an acre of gardens lost including our beloved Ocean Terrace and Native Bowl gardens.

After 18 months of construction to stabilize the cliffside, the Main Salon and interior rooms of the property were reopened as of October 4, 2024.

On June 16, 2026, the City of San Clemente announced that Phase I of the cliff stabilization project has been completed. Phase II of the project has now entered the approval stage with the Coastal Commission, which includes rebuilding the structural components of Casa Romantica that were damaged in the landslide. On September 1, 2026, the City of San Clemente approved the partial reopening of the Ocean Terrace and surrounding gardens.

Official Statement (Updated on September 1, 2026):

As of September 1, 2026, the City of San Clemente has approved the partial re-opening of the Ocean Terrace and some of the surrounding gardens that were closed during the April 2023 landslide. Phase II of the construction project is still in the planning stage. Once approved, the construction timeline process outlined by the City of San Clemente and Coastal Commission, may necessitate that the Ocean Terrace and surrounding gardens be closed again. This could take place at any point. All questions regarding the progress of Phase II should be directed to the City of San Clemente.
