5 Essential Tips For Writing A Great Thank You Card After Your Wedding
YOU’RE MARRIED! You’ve celebrated with your family and friends, and now, you get to be in a blissful state of new beginnings with your significant other. Everyone who was there to witness your wedding will remember how much fun they had sharing in such a special moment. Your guests showered you with their love, gifts, and company and now, it’s time to thank them.
Thank you cards are a simple gesture, but mean a great deal to the people who set aside the time to find the perfect gift and make the time to attend your wedding. Amy Behrens, Executive Director of Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens (and someone who writes thank you cards frequently) says, “The habit of writing personalized, handwritten thank-you notes have become more and more rare – which makes receiving one especially meaningful.” Dedicating the time to such a simple but impactful gesture will go a long way.
Here are the 5 essential tips for writing a great thank you card after your wedding from stationary designer and card-writing expert Jen Simpson of Jen Simpson Design.
Jen Simpson has created beautiful stationary designs with her husband, Luke Simpson, for over 10 years. She has created countless stationary sets for brides at Casa Romantica, and designed Casa Romantica’s Bridal Show postcards over the past few years.
Hand-Write Thank You Cards
Hand-writing your cards instead of typing them on a computer will always feel more personal to the recipient because it’s clear that you spent time on the note just for them (no canned copy-paste responses!) It’s also a way for your (or your new spouse’s) personality to shine through. “I think writing a thank you letter is important because you are going the extra mile to make someone’s day. It definitely shows you care. You took the time and then they get a fun surprise in their mailbox,” Jen says.
2. Choose Stationary That Reminds Recipients of Your Special Day
Jen creates beautiful stationery that evokes the details and stylistic elements characterizing her client’s wedding. “Using the same theme, colors, and mood will help to keep your guests thinking about how special it was to be there on your wedding day,” Jen says. You could even consider your thank you card theme to be something that sparks a memory back to your wedding, such as the flowers you carried down the aisle, or the place where you’re spending your honeymoon (especially if you asked for money to help fund your getaway).
3. Include Something Special
Beautiful details such as stamps or a wax seal can make your cards a fun keepsake. If you decide to include something besides the card, consider adding a photo. “Place a photo of you and your recipient inside the envelope for a simple but great surprise,” Jen recommends. In some cases, these cards will be cherished forever!
4. Thank your guests for being there, not just for giving you gifts.
Consider the time and money each of your guests spent. “Even if they didn’t bring a gift, they still came to show support for you,” says Jen.
“When I write a thank you card, I focus on two things: thanking the recipient for their presence, and (if a gift was given) acknowledging the thoughtfulness of the recipient,” says Amy Behrens. “Anyone can say, ‘thank you for this such-and-such-item,’ but it means so much more when you can tell your recipient, ‘I value you, and I am grateful to you for valuing me, too.'”
5. Send them out in 3 months or less.
Yes, it takes effort when you’re juggling all of those marriage documents, a honeymoon, and possibly moving in addition to everything else. But it’s best to send your thank you notes when the memory of your wedding day – and the giving of gifts – is still fresh in your guests’ minds. Bonus: the faster you get them finished, the more relieved you’ll be!
Wrap up your amazing celebration with a note that comes from the heart. You’ll be happy you did.
