San Clemente, CA – Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a nonprofit southern California cultural center, is pleased to announce that the upcoming speakers for their Casa Up Close educational program are Dr. James L. Doti, President Emeritus of Chapman University, and Prof. Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of the School of Law at the University of California at Irvine. The events will be held on Thursday, November 10, and Thursday, November 17, respectively.
Casa Romantica’s Casa Up Close series invites guest speakers from all over the United States to engage with the community. Topics span a variety of interests, including arts, education, astronomy, biology, history, and political science. Previous speakers have included Douglas Kirkland, a world renowned photographer; Dana Gioia, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts and poet-laureate; and Kenneth Khachigian, presidential speech writer for Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

Dr. James L. Doti has been known as Chapman University’s longest running and most memorable President. He is a champion of the liberal arts and sciences who transformed the once unexceptional college into a prestigious university. During his 25-year tenure as president, Chapman created 10 schools and colleges, doubled the graduation rate, quadrupled the student body, quintupled the faculty, and boosted assets to $1 billion.
As a distinguished speaker with Casa Romantica’s Casa Up Close series, Doti will talk about the changes that encouraged his Chapman community to prosper and how the pursuit of art, education, and culture can effect positive change in our community.

Prof. Erwin Chemerinsky: What Does Free Speech Mean?
Prof. Erwin Chemerinsky is the founding Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law, and Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law, at University of California, Irvine. He has been called “most influential person in legal education in the United States” for his efforts to teach the public about constitutional law and how it affects their daily lives. He writes for the Orange County Register and in newspapers across the country. Recently, he co-penned an influential article in the Los Angeles Times about censorship in colleges and universities entitled, “Don’t mock or ignore students’ lack of support for free speech. Teach them.”
As a distinguished speaker with Casa Romantica’s Casa Up Close series, Chemerinsky will talk about the context of free speech that the U.S. Constitution guarantees, and about the great social benefits associated with free speech traditions in our democracy.
