San Clemente, CA – Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a nonprofit southern California cultural center, is pleased to announce its star-studded lineup for the 2019 Casa Jazz Club weekend.
On Friday, September 6, the program kicks off with the Nasheet Waits Trio. Nasheet Waits, an electrifyingly deft drummer, is the son of celebrated percussionist Freddie Waits. The trio is rounded out by Eric Revis, a GRAMMY award-winning bassist, and Bennie Maupin, a heavyweight multi-reedist whose sound first pierced the air in Miles Davis’ seminal album Bitches Brew.
On Saturday, September 7, Grammy-nominated saxophonist Ravi Coltrane leads a quartet. Ravi is the son of legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. He will be joined by GRAMMY-nominated drummer Johnathan Blake, the son of renowned jazz violinist John Blake, Jr., as well as in-demand bassist Dezron Douglas and pianist Glenn Zaleski.
Both concerts feature a special pre-show sunset reception out on Casa Romantica’s Ocean Terrace, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean and San Clemente Pier. The concerts themselves take place in Casa Romantica’s historic Main Salon, an intimate venue that gives attendees up-close access to the musicians in a way that few other venues in Orange County allow.
“The Casa Jazz Club consists of high caliber musicians who have garnered international recognition for their talent,” says Executive Director Berenika Palys. “We are ecstatic to have the Orange County community enjoy headliners from major festival’s headliners, right within Casa Romantica’s Spanish Colonial courtyard.”
The sponsor of the 2019 Casa Jazz Club is Rocco Carbonara, a San Clemente restaurateur.
Friday, September 6, 2019: Nasheet Waits Trio with Bennie Maupin and Eric Revis • $55 ($50 members)
Drummer Nasheet Waits is the torchbearer of today’s most energetic, sophisticated jazz rhythms. As the son of legendary percussionist Frederick Waits, who recorded and performed Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, and Max Roach, Nasheet was mentored by Max Roach himself. He began his career originating the pecussion section for the new York-based Antonio Hart quintet, and moved on to lead percussion for the groundbreaking post-bop jazz trio Jason Moran Bandwagon before forming his own trio. He has collaborated with artists as diverse as Joe Lovano, Jackie McLean, Charles Mingus Orchestra, and Joshua Redman, and has toured extensively in Africa, Europe, Japan, Canada, South America and the United States.
Waits will be joined by Bennie Maupin, a veteran of bop-style jazz who burst onto the scene performing with Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis on reeds and saxophone, and Eric Revis, a bassist whose work with Branford Marsalis earned him a GRAMMY award.
Saturday, September 7, 2019: Ravi Coltrane Quartet with Johnathan Blake, Dezron Douglas and Glenn Zaleski • $75 ($70 members)
Ravi Coltrane, son of the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane and multi-instrumentalist Alice Coltrane is a critically-acclaimed saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. He is a three-time GRAMMY nominee for Best Improvised Jazz Solo, and has released 6 albums as a leader, with countless other recordings with notable artists over the past 30 years. Among the artists that he has performed and recorded with are Elvin Jones, Terence Blanchard, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, Geri Allen, Kenny Barron, Pharaoh Sanders, and the Marsalis family.
Ravi Coltrane will be joined by drummer Johnathan Blake (the son of acclaimed violinist John Blake, Jr.), bassist Dezron Douglas, and pianist Glenn Zaleski.
